What does air duct cleaning mean?
When different components of a forced air heating and cooling system are cleaned this is usually referred to as air duct cleaning. It is usually called this because among the registers, grilles, heat exchangers, heating and cooling coils, drip pans, the fan housing and motor and the air handling housing to name but a few, the air ducts and registers are also cleaned. Most people understand where these are located therefore it is easier just to refer to all these components as “air duct cleaning’.
Like any mechanical appliance it is important to keep you air conditioning unit cleaned and well service to prevent the build up of contaminates like mold, dirt, allergens and dander.
Is air duct cleaning important?
The purity of the air we breathe is important in achieving a healthy quality of life. It is a fact that the indoor air quality of most homes today is worse than the quality of air outside and with the increase of upper respiratory infections it is paramount that we try to improve our air quality as much as possible. What is Dander?

Mold is a type of fungus. There are good types and bad types but most can cause respiratory infections. Most mold reproduces by releasing spores which remain airborne indefinitely.
What is mildew?
Mildew is a certain type of mold and can often describe mold growth that happens in moist areas where it thrives.
What are dust mites?
Dust mites are a common cause of asthma and feed off of flakes of human skin that have been shed. The enzymes that exist in the mites gut and ultimately their feces are the major cause of an allergic reaction in humans. A typical dust mite only measures about 0.4mm in length.
When should I have my vents cleaned?
If you are using a high arrestance filter and have had your air system thoroughly cleaned, then you should not have to clean your system for another 3 to 7 years. If you are using a standard disposable filter which only stops 10% of contaminates in the air then you need to use a registered biocide which should be applied every 6 to 12 months by a technician. The biocide will allow for continual protection against biological growth.
